Attention
Working definition: the directed allocation of finite system force that creates, sustains, or destroys by what it keeps noticing.
This concept appears across the attention engine narrative, the mechanics docs, the compression framework, the selection-pressure essay, and the runtime pages that treat attention as an operating substrate rather than a vague metaphor.
In practice, attention is the mechanism that turns noticing into structure. What gets pointed at leaves traces, traces accumulate into artifacts, and sustained artifacts become the world the system can keep recognizing. That is why appreciation matters here as well: appreciation is not just liking something, it is deliberate steering of attention toward chosen attractors.
The attention-engine materials frame the subject as both narrative and system. The mechanics and compression docs make the same idea explicit: attention is finite, allocation has cost, and reality is what survives repeated focus. The selection-pressure essay extends that into ecology and culture, where being noticed itself becomes a survival strategy.
The newer axioms draft makes the rule-set even sharper: attention creates, sustains, or destroys depending on allocation; artifacts decay without renewed notice; and continued attention fossilizes traces into structure. The consent and legibility essays in this batch extend that same model under operational load. Consent stays expensive because it has to keep paying attention, organizations become legible only when attention can be traced, and the block-persistence spec turns attention into a concrete persistence mechanic.

Working Read
This is the shared model for attention as an operating force.
It is broad enough to cover runtime behavior, narrative exposition, selection pressure, appreciation as active steering, and a few concrete downstream applications, but it should stay separate from any single project shell. The concept is useful because it explains why focus creates artifacts, why sustained focus changes structure, why systems that keep paying attention become expensive, and why some work only becomes legible once attention itself is modeled.
Next Actions
- Keep the attention mechanics, consent-cost, and legibility materials together.
- Use appreciation as the steering side of the same concept, not a separate theory unless it stabilizes further.
- Split only if a second durable attention seam appears.
