Semantic Lineage

In-line summary

Lineage is not merely document succession. It is the history of semantic position. A body of work persists while its meaning, authority, purpose, relationships, and place within a wider field may change. Artifacts remain fixed as records of their moments; later emergence changes how those artifacts are presently understood without changing what they historically were.

For now, no wiki redesign is required. The necessary substrate is simply a trustworthy 🜹 witnessed record with consent [🝁] whenever a meaningful semantic position or relationship becomes legible or changes. Future lineage notices, maps, timelines, or three-dimensional loop visualizations can be derived from those records.

Artifacts hold still. Meaning moves around them. Semantic lineage records the movement.

1. The original question

The inquiry began as a practical wiki problem:

How should some articles remain fully available and referenceable while being visually deemphasized because they represent historical snapshots in the development of the work?

The first answer treated this mainly as documentary status and version lineage. It proposed standing labels such as canonical, active, historical, exploratory, and retired, along with relations such as refined by, incorporated into, and superseded by.

That model was useful but incomplete.

2. The break in the document-version model

The model broke when considering a sequence like:

A-v1 β†’ B-v1 β†’ C-v1

The emergence of C-v1 may reveal something about A that was not previously legible. This produces a new state, A-v2, and may create consequences for B, C, and the relationships among them.

The important correction is:

C-v1 does not alter the historical artifact A-v1.

Instead:

C-v1 emerges
    ↓
C-v1 recontextualizes A-v1
    ↓
A, the continuing body of work, enters state A-v2

A-v1 remains an accurate artifact of its moment. What changes is its present semantic position.

This revealed that the persistent object is not the document. It is the body of work.

3. The central convergence

A body of work can persist across documents, transcripts, websites, specifications, repositories, projects, implementations, names, organizational homes, and successive conceptual states.

Its relationships can also develop over time.

A genealogical child may later become the telic ground of its parent. A project that emerged as an implementation may later reveal the deeper purpose of the framework from which it descended. A historical document may become more important, not less, when later work reveals what it was already carrying.

Therefore:

Lineage is the history of semantic position.

Semantic lineage records:

  • where a body of work stood when an artifact emerged;
  • what role that artifact played at the time;
  • how later work changed its present interpretation;
  • what new relationships became legible;
  • how authority, purpose, dependence, or scope changed;
  • and which consequences were accepted, rejected, deferred, or never taken up.

4. Artifact, body of work, and semantic position

These should remain distinct.

Artifact

A particular collapse of the field into a record: a document, transcript, page, release, diagram, specification, commit, or witnessed statement.

An artifact remains historically fixed.

Body of work

The continuing identity expressed through one or more artifacts and states.

Examples may include a project, framework, protocol, site family, conceptual foundation, or long-running inquiry.

Semantic position

The role a body of work or artifact occupies within the intelligible field at a given time.

Semantic position may include:

  • what it grounds;
  • what grounds it;
  • what it serves;
  • what it clarifies;
  • what it operationalizes;
  • what it contains;
  • what contains it;
  • what it contradicts;
  • what reorients it;
  • what depends upon it;
  • and what telos it advances.

A page may remain textually unchanged while its semantic position changes radically.

5. Relationships are also living objects

The relation between two bodies of work cannot always be reduced to static metadata such as:

parent: A
child: B

The relationship itself may acquire new meaning.

For example:

A generated B.
B generated C.
C revealed the purpose of A.
A then reoriented B.
B's new state changed the role of C.

The version-provenance graph may remain directional and acyclic, while the living work-relationship graph may contain loops, mutual influence, recursive orientation, and changing telic relations.

Possible relation families include:

  • Genealogical: derived from, descended from, forked from, originally articulated in.
  • Constitutive: contains, is part of, integrates, instantiates, provides a layer for.
  • Epistemic: clarifies, refines, reveals, recontextualizes, distinguishes, contradicts.
  • Telic: serves, advances, grounds the purpose of, redirects, constrains, completes.
  • Operational: depends on, implements, governs, supplies evidence for, exposes, consumes.
  • Propagative: may affect, requires review of, invalidates assumptions in, requires migration by, is insulated from, automatically inherits from.

These are possible vocabularies, not current implementation requirements.

6. Emergence produces candidate consequences

A new emergence should not silently rewrite everything connected to it.

Instead, it may produce an impact condition:

emergence
    ↓
candidate semantic consequences
    ↓
witness
    ↓
consented or otherwise authorized uptake
    ↓
new state

Possible dispositions may eventually include proposed, witnessed, accepted, partially accepted, rejected, deferred, and not applicable.

This preserves a critical boundary:

A ripple is not automatically an involuntary cascade.

An emergence may call another body of work into review without itself possessing unilateral authority to change that body.

7. Time has at least two meanings

A semantic relationship may have:

  1. a time at which it is now understood to have been valid; and
  2. a later time at which that relationship became recognized and recorded.

For example, a later project may reveal that an earlier project had always been oriented toward a telos that nobody could yet articulate.

That may eventually be represented as:

valid_from: 2026-03-01
recognized_at: 2026-07-13

This does not falsely claim that the earlier participants already knew the later interpretation.

It preserves both what may have been structurally present and when it became legible.

8. The visualization inquiry

A word cloud was considered and rejected as insufficient. It can show weight, but not relation, containment, recursive influence, telic orientation, semantic movement, or change across time.

A two-dimensional graph also broke quickly because the field contains overlapping families, nested works, feedback, reorientation, and multiple simultaneous relationship types.

A possible future visual form emerged:

A temporal three-dimensional ecology of loops.

Possible visual semantics included:

  • loop size as semantic gravity or scope;
  • color as broad family or field;
  • thickness as stabilization or authority;
  • spatial proximity as semantic affinity;
  • height as abstraction layer;
  • nesting as constitutive inclusion;
  • linking as reciprocal coupling;
  • orbit as telic orientation;
  • tilt or movement as semantic reorientation;
  • animation or trails as change through time.

But this visualization is explicitly deferred. It would be a derived view, not the source of truth.

9. The minimal commitment

The immediate need is not a new wiki architecture, taxonomy, or visualization.

The immediate need is to make a trustworthy record when semantic position becomes legible or changes.

The primitive is:

A minimal conceptual record needs to preserve:

  • what is being asserted;
  • what body, artifact, or relationship it concerns;
  • when it became legible;
  • what evidence or prior records it derives from;
  • who or what witnessed it;
  • whose consent gives it standing;
  • what earlier semantic position it changes without erasing;
  • and whether it is proposed, accepted, disputed, or deferred.

A possible future shape is:

10. Current decision

The wiki does not need to change now.

No lineage banners, standing taxonomy, graph database, or three-dimensional interface is required as a prerequisite to continuing the work.

The current practice can remain:

  1. preserve the artifact;
  2. record meaningful emergence;
  3. witness the asserted semantic relation;
  4. obtain or record the relevant consent;
  5. preserve derivation from prior records;
  6. avoid rewriting earlier artifacts to make them appear to know the future.

Everything else may be derived later.

The visualization is not the lineage. The consented witnessed record is the lineage substrate.

Possible Forks

None of these is presently required.

1. Minimal Semantic Record Convention

Develop a small, human-readable convention for semantic assertions, witnessed emergence, consent, derivation, effective time, recognition time, and disposition.

2. Semantic Position Register

Create one maintained Markdown or YAML register for bodies of work and their present semantic positions without modifying every wiki article.

3. Documentary Lineage Markup

Return to page-level notices only when readers encounter meaningful ambiguity between historical artifacts and current guidance. Derive the notices from semantic records.

4. Relationship Ontology

Develop a controlled vocabulary for genealogical, constitutive, epistemic, telic, operational, and propagation relations, allowing the vocabulary to emerge from actual records.

5. Temporal and Bitemporal Model

Distinguish when a relation held, when it was recognized, when it was recorded, and when it ceased to govern.

6. Semantic Impact and Review Workflow

Model how an emergence creates candidate ripple effects across connected bodies of work, including review, acceptance, partial uptake, rejection, deferral, and insulation.

7. Three-Dimensional Loop Visualization

Build a temporal 3D semantic ecology in which bodies of work appear as loops with changing size, color, thickness, position, containment, orbit, and relation.

8. Query and Reconstruction

Support questions such as:

  • Where did this concept stand on a particular date?
  • What reoriented this project?
  • Which works currently depend on this invariant?
  • Which present relationships were recognized only retrospectively?
  • What semantic consequences remain unresolved?
  • What did the field look like before a particular synthesis appeared?

9. Consented Shared Lineage

Allow multiple participants to consent to, dispute, fork, or separately maintain semantic-position records.

10. Semantic Lineage as a General System

Explore applications to institutional memory, scientific theory, legal interpretation, standards development, organizational strategy, civic discourse, personal identity, and constitutional self-models.
