Toward the Physics of Meaning

Status

Artifact (exploratory). Not a claim about physical reality; a proposal for a constraint-based theory of meaning propagation.

Premise

Meaning behaves less like an object and more like a field phenomenon. It does not reside in artifacts, agents, or symbols, but emerges under specific conditions when artifacts are encountered by witnesses within frames of allowance.

The failure to model these conditions has led to systemic breakdowns: context collapse, attribution warfare, extractive platforms, and AI-mediated harm. These are not primarily moral failures. They are failures of instrumentation.

This document sketches an early framework for what might be called the physics of meaning: the study of invariant constraints under which meaning can travel, transform, and remain coherent across witnesses, contexts, and time.

Scope and Non-Claims

This framework:

  • Does not propose new particle physics
  • Does not redefine spacetime or matter
  • Does not claim ontological primacy

Instead, it operates at the level of:

  • information flow
  • interpretation
  • consent and allowance
  • witness-conditioned stabilization

Physics is invoked here in its minimalist sense: the study of constraints that operate regardless of belief.

Core Distinction: Artifact vs Attractor

A foundational distinction:

  • Artifact: discrete, addressable, stable. A thing that can be stored, copied, or transmitted.
  • Attractor: continuous, field-like, emergent. A pattern of pull inferred from resonance.

Artifacts can be consented, attributed, and transported. Attractors cannot be owned, only entered.

Collapsing this distinction leads to control fantasies (attempting to own attractors) or nihilism (discarding artifacts as meaningless).

Witness as a First-Class Variable

Meaning does not exist without a witness.

A witness is not merely an observer, but an active participant whose frame conditions which interpretations are available. Meaning is realized at the moment of witnessing; prior to that, artifacts hold only potential.

This parallels (without equating to) measurement in physics: the system is not determined until interaction occurs.

Consent as Transport

Consent is not an after-the-fact permission layer. It is a transport constraint.

Consent-as-Transport proposes that artifacts carry with them metadata specifying:

  • allowed contexts of use
  • permitted transformations
  • attribution requirements
  • renewal or revocation conditions

Consent does not restrict movement; it orients it.

When consent metadata is absent or ignored, artifacts may still propagate—but meaning becomes unstable, coercive, or extractive.

Time Without Linear Privilege

Meaning is not indexed solely by timestamp.

Interpretive causality allows:

  • later witnesses to reinterpret earlier artifacts
  • renewed consent to alter future use without altering the artifact
  • retrospective stabilization without paradox

This is not time reversal in a physical sense, but loop re-entry at the level of interpretation.

Semantic Collapse

Semantic collapse occurs when meaning is forced to travel without sufficient orientation.

Common collapse modes include:

  • decontextualization
  • attribution stripping
  • non-consensual transformation
  • witness mismatch

Collapse is not binary; it occurs along gradients and often appears only after scale is introduced.

Conserved Quantities (Provisional)

Early candidates for invariants in the physics of meaning:

  1. Witness — meaning requires realization
  2. Consent — meaning requires allowed transformation
  3. Frame — meaning requires orientation
  4. Attractor Integrity — pull cannot be owned
  5. Artifact Stability — structure enables transport

These are not axioms but working hypotheses.

Implications

If meaning obeys constraints, then:

  • platforms require consent-aware transport layers
  • AI systems must model witness context explicitly
  • attribution becomes functional, not moral
  • free speech coexists with non-extractive propagation

The goal is not control, but coherence.

It is an invitation to treat meaning not as something we argue over endlessly, but as something we can instrument, respect, and steward.

The physics of meaning is not about what is true. It is about what can travel without breaking.
