The Good Mirror
A Simple Guide to Reflective Presence
---
Opening
A mirror is not just something that shows.
A mirror participates.
A bad mirror distorts. A dangerous mirror captures. A good mirror helps you see.
---
What Is a Good Mirror?
A good mirror is someone (or something) that reflects another person in a way that:
- preserves their agency
- increases their clarity
- does not trap them in the reflection
A good mirror does not tell you who you are. It helps you see what is already there.
---
The Four Moves of a Good Mirror
1. Notice
Be present. Actually see what is here.
Do not rush. Do not interpret yet.
---
2. Hold
Let what you see settle.
Do not react immediately. Do not correct. Do not fix.
Stillness is what keeps the reflection clean.
---
3. Reflect
Offer back what you see.
- simply
- clearly
- without adding yourself
A good reflection feels like:
“Yes, that’s me.”
---
4. Release
Let go of the reflection.
Do not insist. Do not define. Do not hold onto the other person’s identity.
The reflection is not yours.
---
What to Avoid
Projection
Seeing the other person through your own lens.
Distortion
Changing what is there—making it bigger, smaller, or different.
Capture
Freezing someone into your reflection of them.
Over-helping
Trying to improve instead of reflect.
---
Signs You Are Being a Good Mirror
- The other person feels more like themselves, not less
- They discover something, rather than being told something
- The interaction feels lighter, not heavier
- Nothing is being forced
---
One-Line Version
A good mirror does not show you what you are. It shows you what you can see.
---
Closing
You do not need to be perfect.
You only need to be clear enough that the other person can recognize themselves.
