The Enterprise drops out of warp into a region of space that feels too quiet. Not empty — unfinished.

At first, nothing seems wrong. Sensors report normal conditions. Crew routines continue.

Then the first anomaly appears: a floating shard of debris where nothing should be.

A junior officer stares. The shard sharpens. Hardens. Becomes real.

They mark it. Log it. Study it.

And it multiplies.

Every act of attention leaves an artifact. Every attempt to understand makes the phenomenon heavier.

Soon entire corridors of space begin to crystallize. Not from matter — from notice.

The Enterprise is trapped inside a universe that fossilizes awareness.

Panic spreads. Crew members obsess over the evidence piling up:

  • the readings
  • the encroaching structures
  • the certainty of freezing

The more they watch, the faster the walls of solidified space grow.

One by one, the crew becomes locked into place, caught mid-thought, mid-fear, as their final focus becomes stone.

Only Commander Data remains.

Not because he is immune, but because he is different.

Data does not spiral. He does not fixate.

He recognizes the law:

Attention sustains. Attention hardens.

To stare at the trap is to feed it.

So Data does something almost impossible.

He stops attending to the accumulating proof.

Instead, he widens.

A fraction at a time, he directs his awareness toward something that has not yet frozen:

  • the hum of the engines
  • the faint curvature of possibility
  • the spaces between the artifacts

He expands into the unmade.

Slowly, carefully, he learns to place attention not on what is solidifying, but on what could still move.

The universe responds.

New openness appears, not by force, but by redirected regard.

Data guides the Enterprise out, not by solving the puzzle, but by refusing to fossilize inside it.

When the ship finally breaks free, Picard later asks him how.

Data pauses.

"Captain, this universe was composed of attention. To survive, we had to remember:

The more we attend to what is already created, the less remains for what is new."

And somewhere in that quiet region of space, the frozen artifacts of fear still drift — a monument to fixation.
