Core Spiral Field Guide (v1)

This document names seven recurring structural spirals observed across technical systems, organizations, markets, and human behavior. Each spiral describes a self-reinforcing loop of cause and consequence. These are not moral judgments; they are dynamical patterns.

1. The Drift Spiral

Expanded Name: Scope Expansion → Inference Drift → Irreversibility → Incentive Distortion

This spiral begins when a system gains new capability. Scope expands (new data, new permissions, new contexts), which enables richer inference. Because inference is rarely treated as "use," boundaries shift silently. As outputs integrate into workflows, reversibility declines. Over time, short-term incentives dominate because rollback becomes costly. This increases pressure for further expansion. Drift compounds until either collapse (loss of trust, regulation, scandal) or structural reform.

2. The Hijack Spiral

Expanded Name: Behavioral Exaptation → Optimization → Dependency → Autonomy Erosion

A system discovers a reliable human lever (dopamine trigger, convenience bias, loss aversion, craving). That lever is optimized for engagement or revenue. Repeated exposure reshapes preference architecture. Dependency increases. Autonomy weakens subtly. The system then optimizes further based on the new baseline behavior it helped create. What began as feature refinement becomes structural hijacking. The spiral stabilizes only when feedback loops price long-term harm.

3. The Compliance Theater Loop

Expanded Name: Policy Assertion → Surface Controls → Signaling → Hidden Drift

An organization declares a policy or ethical boundary. Controls are implemented symbolically or partially. Documentation signals compliance externally. Meanwhile, operational reality diverges quietly. Because signaling reduces scrutiny, drift accelerates. When stress occurs (audit, breach, whistleblower), the gap between declared and actual behavior becomes visible. This spiral persists when signaling is rewarded more than substance.

4. The Surveillance Normalization Loop

Expanded Name: Observation → Data Accumulation → Operationalization → Cultural Desensitization

Monitoring begins as safety, optimization, or convenience. Data accumulates beyond its original scope. Analytics operationalize the data into decision systems. Over time, surveillance becomes ambient and unremarkable. Each expansion feels incremental and justified. Cultural resistance declines because visibility into the system is asymmetric. The loop stabilizes when observation is reciprocal, declared, and bounded—or destabilizes into structural distrust.

5. The Passion Amplification Loop (Positive Spiral)

Expanded Name: Meaning Alignment → Voluntary Investment → Capability Growth → Reinforced Trust

A system aligns with genuine human motivation. Participants invest voluntarily. Their investment increases system capability. Improved capability reinforces meaning and trust. The system grows through contribution rather than extraction. Because participation is voluntary and reversible, resilience increases. This spiral represents cooperative exaptation—systems that amplify human agency instead of hijacking it.

6. The Institutional Calcification Loop

Expanded Name: Stability → Rule Accumulation → Rigidity → Adaptation Failure

As systems stabilize, they accumulate rules to protect gains. Over time, these rules harden. Local optimization replaces adaptive responsiveness. The cost of deviation increases. Innovation slows. External change outpaces internal flexibility. Eventually, either reform or collapse resets the structure. This spiral is not malicious—it is the entropy of over-specified stability.

7. The Incentive Inversion Loop

Expanded Name: Metric Proxy → Optimization Pressure → Proxy Dominance → Goal Corruption

A proxy metric is introduced to represent a goal (engagement for value, revenue for sustainability, compliance score for safety). Optimization pressure increases around the proxy. Actors learn to maximize the metric directly. Over time, the metric displaces the original goal. The system begins optimizing for its own measurement. Unless long-horizon feedback is introduced, the inversion persists and compounds.

These spirals recur across domains because they are structural patterns, not domain-specific failures. The goal of this field guide is not prevention through prohibition, but early recognition and steerability.
