AI Readiness Begins with Intent

To get help from — or defend against — AI, there is a first stage.

Inventory your machine-readable data. Assign guardianship and purpose statements. Gate both human and automated access through enforceable policy.

Most firms believe they already do this.

And in human terms, they do.

But AI does not understand intent.

AI sees access and capability. If someone can technically access data, the system assumes it may use that data for any machine-possible purpose unless explicitly constrained.

That gap — between human policy and machine-legible intent — is where new risk now lives.

The Missing Layer

Many organizations already have structure. They have permissions, shared drives, client folders, operational systems, and professional norms.

But what is often missing is an explicit, management-endorsed layer that makes intent machine-readable.

AI systems do not inherit cultural expectations. They operate on what is technically possible.

Without encoded purpose and boundary clarity, automation expands into ambiguity.

With encoded intent, automation becomes leverage.

A Practical Phase 1

A lightweight Phase 1 does not require transformation. It requires clarification.

It can include:

• A management statement of intent governing AI and automated access • Explicit data guardianship assignments • Purpose-bound access policies • Structural boundary metadata where appropriate • Clear expectations for both human and automated data interaction

This is not bureaucracy.

It is laying the highway for AI-driven processes — safely.
