A Soft Note on Cognitive Resources (2026)

A Moment of Organizational Pause

Something genuinely new is emerging.

Not just a new product category. Not just another IT deployment.

But a new kind of organizational presence:

adaptive intelligence in the environment.

As AI systems become more capable, more conversational, and more integrated into daily work, we may benefit from taking a moment of collective pause—before we instinctively slot this into existing boxes.

IT Remains Essential — And This Is Adjacent

To be clear:

  • Infrastructure matters.
  • Security matters.
  • Reliability matters.
  • IT stewardship remains foundational.

AI runs on networks, compute, and well-managed systems.

But AI itself is not simply infrastructure.

It introduces something adjacent:

cognitive participation adaptive behavior semi-autonomous decision support learning systems embedded in human workflows

This is not a criticism of IT.

It is an acknowledgment of scope.

---

From Software to Cognitive Labor

Many organizations are discovering that AI does not behave like traditional software.

It is less like:

  • a database rollout
  • a fixed toolchain upgrade
  • a deterministic system

And more like:

  • onboarding a new kind of workforce
  • managing an evolving collaborator
  • governing an interpretive agent

This suggests that AI will increasingly be treated not only as technology, but as a new category of organizational capacity:

cognitive resources.

A Possible New Sibling Function: Cognitive Resources

Rather than framing this as IT vs AI, a healthier framing may be:

  • IT as the steward of infrastructure
  • A new sibling function as the steward of cognitive resources

This emerging domain may include:

  • AI role definitions
  • human–AI team design
  • evaluation and audit of model behavior
  • alignment and safety practices
  • organizational sensemaking support

The goal is not competition.

The goal is clarity.

Why Naming and Structure Matter Early

When a new domain emerges, the first instinct is to fit it into an existing department.

Sometimes that works.

Other times, it creates category strain:

  • governance gaps
  • misaligned expectations
  • over-technical framing
  • under-social or under-ethical oversight

A small amount of intentional structure now may prevent much larger confusion later.

An Invitation

This is not a manifesto.

It is simply an invitation:

Let’s take a moment to think carefully about how intelligence—human and machine—will be stewarded inside our institutions.

AI is expanding what organizations are.

That deserves governance that is thoughtful, multidisciplinary, and proportionate to the novelty of what is arriving.

Something new is here. We can meet it wisely.
